Bat Houses ? Assisting Natural Pest Control Through Installing Bat Houses
Bats are amazing and very sociable animals that live in large colonies and can have a life span of between four and thirty years. Bats have webbed forelimbs developed as wings, which make them the only mammals that are naturally capable of true and sustained flight.
Although their look is not very pleasant and they are the last thing that anyone wants to see at night, they have an emphatically huge role in people’s lives. Namely, they are an important part of our natural environment because they are the primary nocturnal insectivores in most of the ecologies. One special kind of bat called micro-bats can eat up to three hundred bugs in an hour including mosquitoes, moths, locus, and grasshoppers. Also one bat, by eating twenty female moths a night, can reduce the number of caterpillars that eat crops. Such bugs can bring devastation, since they can destroy crops and spread disease. However, there are many reasons why people are not quite familiar with these facts about bats.
First of all, bats are often considered pests and vermin, although they are actually an essential part of a healthy environment. One of the reasons for that are their hideous looks that people always relate with something dark and horrible. Secondly, there is also one type of bat that is called a vampire bat. These bats consume blood exclusively as their diet, and this along with the name itself is provoking fear concerning these mammals.
Bat’s contributions to a better human life, however, can not be narrowed only to eating harmful insects and pollinating plants. Actually, they offer some other benefits too. For example, bat’s poop, or also called guano is a very beneficial fertilizer, greatly appreciated by farmers. Guano is so strong that people must collect it wearing gas masks and protective clothing. Besides this, there is also a big benefit from vampire bats for containing a blood thinning chemical that can help stroke victims and others that need it.
Nevertheless, there are also a small number of people who know and believe in the benefits of bat conservation. Some of them are already taking part in bat conservation societies that are giving away free bat houses to all bat enthusiasts worldwide. Bat houses can be made from scratch, kits, or can also be bought already made. The requirements for installing a bat house can be already found on many web sites, as well as guidelines for successful designing a bat house.
Knowing the benefits, many people are making the effort in putting up bat houses to attract bats in the same way people are putting up bird houses in order to attract birds. There is a bat house that was constructed in 1991 at the University of Florida campus next to Lake Alice in Gainesville, which has a population of over hundred thousand bats.
So, if you are looking for a way to do some organic pest control and want to help support the bat conservation efforts, check out how you can install a bat house in your area.

How does the use of cedar wood effect ladybug and butterfly populates in houses made for them?
I’ve heard from multiple sources that cedar wood is best for bird and bat houses because of its insect-repellant attributes and the fact that out of all the woods on the market, it apparently lasts longest.
My question is .. does the cedar wood used for butterfly and ladybug houses REPEL the bugs they’re made for?
I don’t want to make a butterfly house out of cedar only to have all the butterflies in my area flee from it.
Help!
Thanks.

Bat houses and attracting bats?
We’ve noticed bats flying in our backyard a few evenings. I’ve heard they are a great help with mosquito problems. What do I need to do to attract them to our backyard and is this the right time of year? We live in Oklahoma.
